We have encountered various media in the past weeks, that is, ways of engaging the creative essay. To be specific:
Ba, Mariama Bâ. So Long a Letter. Trans. Modupé Bodé-Thomas. Long Grove, Illinois: Waveland Press, Inc., 2012 (1980, in French by Nouvelles editions africaines du Sénégal). Read any version, in any language. (This will be made available online in late August.)
Ngozi Adichie, Chimamanda. We Should All Be Feminists. Ballantine Books, 2015. ). Read any version, in any language. This is also a talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg3umXU_qWc
Coates, Ta-Nehisi. Between the World and Me. New York: Spiegel & Grau, 2015. ) Read any version, in any language. (Obtain a cop yourself, thank you!)
Marjane Satrapi’s Chicken with Plums (2004)). Read any version, in any language. (See link I sent out last week, and here: https://kupdf.net/download/chicken-with-plumspdf_59a72ea6dc0d604953568edd_pdf )
Dr. Dre’s “A powerful Beats” (2021) by Dr. Dre **ad campaign hit social platforms on Thursday and it featured three-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. The powerful two-minute video digs deeply into common stereotypes and hypocrisies surrounding Black culture all while celebrating it.” Starring Naomi Osaka, Lil Baby, Bubba Wallace, and Janaya Khan, Narrated by Tobe Nwigwe, Directed by Melina Matsoukas, Written by Lena Waithe (3 minutes)

And: Don’t panic, just email me. It’s a whole lot of directions for 5 minutes of talking.

Due date to send me the materials (see below for various ways to send), Monday, November 1.

In this assignment, you can answer the below questions in either:
an oral presentation
submitted as a video: see below how to record, with
accompanying Powerpoint slides, or illustrations on a smartboard or greenboard or blackboard; OR,
a conversation with someone
submitted as a video: see below how to record, with
accompanying Powerpoint slides or illustrations on a smartboard or greenboard or blackboard; OR,
a graphic essay, so where you draw out (even stick figures) are fine, what you want to say, and the dialogue comes in the form of speech bubbles
submitted as a PDF, with a separate sound file to accompany it; or,
as a video of the images you made either:
narrated with your own voice-over narration.

The MAIN QUESTION you are answering is:
In the next 5 minutes, how can I make an argument about one of the below three current events and convince my audience in such a way that:
they should care about what I think; AND,
they should care about what I think because it will make our collective world better.
Define here, what you mean by collective world—your local community, your national community, world community, a certain type of translocal community? Translocal means specific communities in different nation-states, for example indigenous farmers in countries still largely economically dominated by North America and Europe. Translocal often avoids passing through an official governmental channel. An example is Via Campesina: https://viacampesina.org/en/ or Black Lives Matter throughout the countries run by histories of coloniality and whiteness instrumentalized to facilitate white power.
Read or listen to Chimananda Ngozi Adichie, Chimamanda.See link above.
How is your essay pedagogical, that is Adichie is clear about her ethical message to her audience. Be sure to include a short discussion with a quote from Adichie, which resonates or justifies how you understand the “pedagogical” role of your essay own essay, even if the topic is completely different. Look up the word “pedagogical” in link below, to think about how your essay allows you to engage some of the qualities of the pedagogical: https://www.ukessays.com/essays/education/transformative-pedagogy-and-learning-education-essay.php
Remember that a creative essay (not necessarily an academic one) draws on qualities that allow the person in front of you to feel invoked directly, not necessarily that you use the second person (as Baldwin and Bâ did). [This comes from your own incredible theorizations of the ‘essay’ à la Baldwin, in your previous discussion forums]. We all process, or in Stuart Hall’s words, “decode” information in our own way. With an essay, we also share how we ourselves have decoded/interpreted a given situation, and might want to further pay it forward it with others. Great video on Stuart Hall, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWP_N_FoW-I

Consider one of the 3 below events, or another if you prefer:
First possibility:
The current moment in the Middle East. See Judith Butler’s essay recently here: https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v45/n20/judith-butler/the-compass-of-mourning

Second possibility:
The “slow violence” (Rob Nixon, 2013) of the global policy on the overall degradation of the planet, namely the statement by former Chief Economist of the World Bank (1991-93), including many various high-level appointments for US-American government and Harvard University. Summers quote by Rob Nixon,[1] writes:
I think the economic logic behind dumping a load of toxic waste in the lowest-wage country is impeccable and we should face up to that. … I’ve always thought that countries in Africa are vastly under polluted; their air quality is probably vastly inefficiently low compared to Los Angeles. . . . Just between you and me, shouldn’t the World Bank be encouraging more migration of the dirty industries to the Least Developed Countries? (Lawrence Summers, confidential World Bank memo, December 12, 1991)
Lawrence Summers is today retired. His full bio is here or here also.

Third possibility:
Recent work, studies, and controversies in thinking neurodiversity:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jul/05/the-mother-of-neurodiversity-how-judy-singer-changed-the-world
And to be responsible, to also offer Singer’s apology in regards to her miswording on Twitter recently: https://www.engelby.dk/transphobia-and-the-neurodivergent-community/

Largest study to date confirms overlap between autism and gender diversity

Fourth possibility
You may choose another topic as well.
