The decision whether or not to send a child to daycare can be very difficult. Economic hardships and the financial necessity of both parents working can add extra weight to an already difficult decision. Even when the decision to send a child to some form of daycare is easily made, it can be a challenge to find a daycare that matches the qualities we look for in good child care, at an affordable price.
This can be made even more difficult depending on where you live. Daycare and parental leave policies vary considerably around the world. As you saw in your reading (p.157), Norway and Australia provide a significant amount of paid parental leave and subsidized day care. In contrast, there are very few government policies in the United States that provide support in these areas.
For this writing assignment, I want you to describe and justify what you think would be the best federal policy for high-quality maternity/paternity leave and daycare. Keep in mind issues like affordability and quality of care.
Some questions you might answer in your paper would be:
Would parents get more that 6 weeks of paid leave from work? Would new mothers get more than fathers?
Would your policy designate government funding for all children to receive care?
What age would this begin?
What type of care would they get?
How would these childcare centers be designed?
Finally, describe why you have designed your policy in this way.
To get some ideas of what other countries are doing read pages 145-151. The book describes federal policies/ laws of various countries that allocate money and specific rules for childcare. For instance, some countries provide free care to all children starting in infancy while other countries offer very low-cost childcare.
Feel free to include personal experiences (to help justify your policies). Just maker sure to balance your experiences with some scientific evidence and data from existing programs to support your proposal. (There are lots of examples in your book that you can cite).
This paper should be 1 or 1-1/2 pages of concise content writing with a separate page for the reference list. Please do not exceed this page length. Please do not put large spaces between paragraphs as you will lose points.
