“Critical Practice: Improving my area of practice through the critical appraisal of research evidence.”
There are four elements of this assignment. You must complete all of them in order to pass. They are:
• Develop two research questions – a qualitative and a quantitative research question – using the PICOT research tool
• Find and critique relevant research evidence
• Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the research evidence for your area of practice
• Develop an action plan to show how you will use your new knowledge either to inform your decision-making in practice OR evaluate an aspect of service delivery.
You must explain how you use search terms from your PICOT questions to search databases for research evidence.
You are encouraged to use critical analysis tools to critique your research papers.
You must compare and contrast your critique of the papers in a Discussion section and develop an idea for how to improve your area of practice.
You are encouraged to use conceptual tools to evaluate your idea for change.
You must develop a detailed action plan of how you will change your area of practice and are encouraged to use conceptual tools in order to structure this plan.

Specific Guidelines: (Suggested word lengths are indicative only)
Introduction: (300-500 words)
Give a brief introduction to your chosen topic area. Provide a clear rationale for topic choice. Explain your topic choice within the wider context of global healthcare such as government directives, political influences and global health concerns.
Research Questions: (300 words)
Using the PICOT tool, develop two research questions to formulate an answerable question to address your topic area. One must be a QUALITATIVE question and one must be QUANTITATIVE.
Finding and critiquing research: (800-1000 words)
Using search terms taken from your PICOT questions, search relevant databases for research that relates to your chosen topic area to answer your research questions. Select two pieces of research evidence which adopt different research methodologies:
• One must be QUALITATIVE (phenomenology, ethnography, grounded theory, critical theory)
• One must be QUANTITATIVE (randomised control trial, survey, experimental design or a cohort study. Avoid using a Systematic Review.)
Where possible, se contemporary research from a peer reviewed journal.
Explain your literature search strategy and how you chose your final two pieces of evidence.
Critically appraise each article using an appropriate critical appraisal framework.
Discussion: (700-800 words)
Compare and contrast the research findings from your critical appraisals. Outline the strengths and weaknesses of each article discussing its relative applicability to your chosen area of professional practice. Develop an idea of how to change your area of practice building on your critique of the research.
Action Plan: (800-1000 words)
Evaluate your idea for change, using the conceptual tools outlined in the learning materials. Develop a detailed action plan to either inform your decision-making in practice OR evaluate an aspect of service delivery using the tools discussed in the learning materials.
Conclusion: (300 words)
Outline the key learning points of your experience of this assignment.
