I also agree that performance reviews are a waste of time. Like the article mentioned I had not thought about how much time and money is wasted on these performance reviews. I worked for a large retail corporation that did performance reviews and they would be scheduled around your yearly anniversary. It caused more stress with employees who all work in a retail business. I remember cashiering and hearing employees complain and even get nervous about their review. That was back when they kept track of how many items we were scanning per hour to get customers out of the store. If we did not do well for that year our raise was lower. Along with our attendance. For me this was weird because it is not like there was much emphasis on finding ways to get better or coaching to get better for situations like these. In my two performance reviews that I had it was awkward because I had to speak with a manager that I had only saw every once in a while and it was quick. Like this article stated that performance reviews wee for offering advice on how to improve but that was never the case.
I fully believe in coaching or mentoring an employee. I would love nothing but to have a mentor in accounting and someone who would help me throughout the year instead of trying to figure it out and failing at it. Which for my position happens a lot more than I’d like to admit. I like to be challenged instead of complacent with what I do daily, weekly, or monthly. Something that employers are doing that I hear a lot of complaints about is adding more work to one employee without increasing pay or incentive to do the work. Especially lately I am finding it hard to want to work as hard as I used to due to the pile of jobs that have been added to my plate which means things are not being done like it used to be when there were two people doing the jobs that I currently do.
