Respond to the following questions (worth 1 point each):
1. On pp. 4-5 of the Chapter “What is Academic Writing?,” the discusses “7 Myths About Writing.” Review the list and identify 2 “myths” that resonate with you. Discuss why you connect with these myths and how you think we might best address them during our course this semester.
Be sure to use proper citation if you use cited material/quotes in your responses.
If you use cited material/quotes in your responses, be sure it supports your own reflection/discussion/analysis rather than replaces it.
2. In this week’s reading about Discourse Communities, the author states, “With these characteristics in mind, it is obvious that all major fields of study offered on this campus are discourse communities. Our class also forms a discourse community. The people at your place of employment, your circle of friends, your family, and many other groups to which you belong constitute a discourse community.” Explore of your life spaces and consider how many discourse communities do you belong to. Select one of your discourse communities and share 2-3 specific language/rhetorical characteristics of that community. For example, you may list some specialized vocabulary from one of your on-line communities, specific types of reports needed in your academic major, types of memos typically used in your work space, etc.
