Writing assignment 1- Is Social Media Making Us More Narcissistic?
Narcissist (noun)-
A: an extremely self-centered person who has an exaggerated sense of self-importance
B: a person who is overly concerned with his or her physical appearance
Instructions and expectations-
1. First, before you jump head first into the assignment, pay attention to the definition of a narcissist. Then, please read the article provided for context. This will go a long way into properly addressing the essay prompt. Also, please refer to the information provided in chapters 4 and 9 which deal with the “Expectations of Academic Writing” and “Managing the Writing Process”
2. Please do NOT simply give me ideas that were stated in the article. I would like to know YOUR thoughts and YOUR perspective.
3. Even if you are a person that does not utilize social media that often, you should still be able to provide perspective based on the visible nature in which social media is used throughout our society.
4. The article provided may refer to political figures; however, please stay away from biased or incendiary political commentary.
5. I usually want my students to stay away from first person references, but on this assignment, I will allow it. Your essay is to not exceed 500 words, which includes the title of your paper and the body. If you exceed 500 words, you may be penalized.
6. When you are creating your essay, consider these questions:
— Do you recognize yourself or your friends or family in any of the descriptions in this article? Are you sometimes too fixated on collecting “likes” and thinking about how others see you?
— What’s the line between “healthy self-love” that “requires being fully alive at this moment, as opposed to being virtually alive while wondering what others think,” and unhealthy narcissism? How can you stay on the healthy side of the line?
7. I expect a well thought out effort on this essay. Please do not not rush. Show me that you are a critical thinker.
