Assignment 9 (Genre 1)
The theoretical framework that we have been developing culminates in the concept of “genre,” more specifically “genre as social action.” The goal of the coming week’s reading is to tease out exactly what “social action means” and to contemplate the consequences of introducing this concept to rhetoric.
For this assignment, please read pages 69-82 (chapter 5 and part of chapter 6) of Bawarshi &Reiff’s Genre: An Introduction to History, Theory, Research, and Pedagogy. As you read, take note of how genres are related to rhetorical situations through “definitions” and “typifications.” One question to consider is, what’s the difference between claiming that situations are the result of “definition” and not “perception”? (Page 70.) Describe or sketch out the relationship between Bitzer, Schutz, and Miller (in Bawarshi & Reiff). In addition to substantiating this line of inquiry, draw connections to your own ideas and to the notion of schema from Toren. The goal here is to see the concept of genre as an extension of the way human beings think in general (rather than some specialized concept invented for classes like this one). Please note anything else that strikes you as particularly significant in this excerpt from the chapter, or anything that raises unanswerable questions for you – we should discuss those as a class.
In addition to your notes, I’d like you to return to your In-class 2 assignment writing and extend the analysis of the syllabus genre with what we’ve learned since then. How might we explain how syllabi “socialize students into [discourse communities]” (Afros & Schryer 2009: 231)? Furthermore, how might syllabi “transform the physical setting of the classroom into the discursive and ideological site of action in which students, the teacher, and their work will assume certain significance and value” (2003: 119)? Alternatively, if you’d like to analyze another document, you could apply the quoted statements to another genre, such as this assignment. How might said genre work to socialize you into a particular community? To transform physical settings into discursive and ideological sites of action? Please refer to specific concepts from the chapter in your analysis. Please submit this writing as a second document.
