One of the required books for this course is titled Make It Stick. There are eight total chapters; for each response, you will read one of the chapters listed below. (No credit for responses about the excluded chapters or for a chapter you’ve already read/submitted a response). Here are the chapter titles with some key ideas so you can make an informed choice on what you want to read:
Chapter 1: Learning is Misunderstood
Key ideas: General overview and examples
Chapter 2: To Learn, Retrieve
Key ideas: Retrieve often, and don’t cram
Chapter 3: Mix Up Your Practice
Key ideas: Mix things up, and match testing conditions
Chapter 4: Embrace Difficulties
Key ideas: Challenges, issues, and errors lead to better learning
Chapter 5: Avoid Illusions of Knowing
Key ideas: We’re actually pretty bad at evaluating our own learning
Chapter 7: Increase Your Abilities
Key ideas: How can we improve our ‘natural’ learning ability
Please note: The ideas presented in this book are based on conclusions from scientific studies. While it’s okay to disagree with the ideas, that disagreement should not be based solely on personal experiences. Anecdotal evidence does not disprove (or prove) rigorous scientific study. (Instead, consider why your experience does not match research — which is really just the experience that many people have, so what’s different?)

As we will learn, reflection can be a powerful tool that provides insight into your learning and helps you assess your understanding of the material. Thus, for each chapter, you will demonstrate that you read, understand, and thought deeply about the material in your chosen chapter through a written response. Reflect on how the chapter reading relates to and influences your knowledge and experiences. There are no length requirements, but I expect you’ll need at least ~300 words for a decent response. Direct quotes should be avoided.

Your submission must address ALL of the following in order to receive full credit (30 points each):
It is clear to your instructor that you completed the entire reading.
You addressed the main points established in the reading.
You make and discuss at least two connections from the reading to the course content (lectures).
You make and discuss at least one connection from the reading to your own experiences.
Your work accurately describes the reading.
Your work is your own.
There are little to no spelling, grammar, or stylistic errors.
