Each paragraph must declare a point, usually formed as that paragraph’s topic sentence, or claim. A topic sentence or claim is like a thesis sentence – except that instead of announcing the argument of the entire paper, it announces the argument of that particular paragraph. In this way, the topic sentence controls the paper’s evidence. The topic sentence is more flexible than the thesis in that it can more readily appear in different places within the paragraph. Most often, however, it appears at or near the beginning. Having written the whole paragraph, you can return to the topic sentence and check whether the topic of the paragraph has been clearly reflected in the writing. ## language used in the literature review • There is no specific length for a paragraph in an academic essay, but three lines are too short and one full page is too long. • Your paragraphs must be sequenced in a logical order because they will provide the major building blocks for the argument in the essay. • Check for mechanical Errors: errors in grammar and style slow your reader down. Sometimes they even obscure your meaning. Always proofread your text before passing it on to your reader. • Verb tense is an indicator that distinguishes papers in the humanities from those in the natural and social sciences. o MLA style requires you to use present tense when you refer to a cited work “Jeffries stipulates” or “the work of Mills and Maguire shows” o In contrast, the APA style requires you to use the past tense or present perfect tense (“Jeffries indicated” or “the work of Mills and Maguire has demonstrated”).
