Final Project Overview: Literary Canon Project The purpose of the literary canon final project is to engage with the literature through curating source material in support of a theme of your choice. In addition, in a professional career, one may be called upon to conduct research and deliver findings in professional settings. No matter how extensive the research or accurate the conclusions, a weak presentation can undermine an argument. A presentation is a tool to assist in making an argument. When creating presentations, students develop skills in researching an issue, synthesizing the information, organizing data logically, and presenting findings in an effective manner. Building on milestone activities, course readings and short papers where you have explored key elements of the assigned texts, the assumption of this class is that all texts are a form of discourse. While there are many perspectives with which to view texts, such as literary, historical, and feminist, to name a few, this class seeks to reveal how literature reflects and refracts the themes of society at large. One area of constant debate is the issue of the canon of literature. The canon of literature is a subjective tradition whereby groups of scholars decide which books are worthy of inclusion in academic discourse, in classrooms, and in publications. This term-long assignment seeks to subvert this tradition through the creation of your own unique canon literature tied to a theme of your choice. You will identify a theme for your canon and then select 4-6 works for this canon. You will create a PowerPoint presentation naming your theme, defining it and discussing its relevance in larger society. Include one slide about each of the 4-6 works, explaining why the work fits your theme and how it reflects issues in the world at large. Final Project Proposal: Theme Selection This proposal will include the following information: -The theme you have selected to work with for your final project -A list of 5 possible works of literature to include in your project -An explanation of how the theme you have chosen connects to each work of literature on your list -An explanation of how the chosen theme connects to society as a whole This proposal should be submitted as a 1-2 page document in MLA format, addressing all of the critical elements outlined above.
