Coding Analysis Task
Goals
1. To understand the purpose and utility of coding analysis when reviewing data
2. To demonstrate the technique of coding analysis
Procedures
1. Refer to the problem you’ve been working on and have your literature review available.
2. Create a list of at least three pre-set codes based on the problem and the literature you
reviewed. These are the codes (i.e., abbreviations and the associated terms to the
abbreviations) that you hypothesize will reflect themes that emerge from the literature
you reviewed for the previous task. The idea is to have these codes help you organize
information from the literature that help tell the “story” about the problem.
3. Create a list of at least three emergent codes that you identify after you go back and
reread the literature. These are the codes (i.e., abbreviations and the associated terms to
the abbreviations) that you now want to couple with the pre-set codes you identified
before reading the literature.
4. In one to two pages, present two charts that list the codes and the information you pulled
from the literature that is associated with each code. Specifically write the following:
A. One paragraph overview reminder of the problem you’ve been trying to solve
B. One chart that provides a list of pre-set codes and the corresponding information
from the literature associated with the codes. Refer to the sample “Taylor
Dissertation Coding” when constructing the chart if you need assistance
C. One chart that provides a list of emergent codes and the corresponding
information from the literature associated with the codes. Refer to the sample
“Taylor Dissertation Coding” again when constructing the chart if you continue to
need assistance

At least three pre-set codes are listed
and are relevant to the identified
problem.
Data corresponds to the pre-set codes.
At least three emergent codes are
listed and correspond to the data.
Three or fewer pre-set codes are listed
and may or may not be relevant to the
identified problem.
Data may or may not correspond to
the pre-set codes.
Three or fewer emergent codes are
listed and may or may not correspond
to the data.
