QUESTIONS THAT SHOULD BE ANSWERED IN THE ESSAY:
Why have you focused on this particular character? Can you relate to her/his conflict or struggle? Does the character elicit from you certain emotional reactions? Put in the same scenario, would you have acted in a similar or dissimilar way? Why? What connects you to the character and/or what exactly sets you apart from the character? Why is this significant?
Consider the character’s name and appearance. What do these reveal about the character? What are you able to infer as a result of this consideration? Does this fictional character remind you of someone from your life? Why? What is the significance of this discovery?
Consider if he/she is a static or dynamic character. Analyze why a character changes or fails to change as a result of the story’s events. Can you present an arguable assertion based on your interpretation?
Consider how the author discloses the character:
by what the character says or thinks
by what the character does
by what other characters say about him/her
by what the author says about him/her
by the significance of the name of the character, gestures, expression
What do these words or actions tell us about what kind of personality the character has?
