Part A Discussion Forum: “Is the Declaration Timeless?”
In this discussion students will examine the concepts of Jefferson’s original “Declaration of Independence” prior to committee revisions and consider how these concepts intersect with modern America.
In the last few years America’s founding principles have been critiqued in various ways by both sides of the political spectrum. Do the ideals of the founding generation still apply in the twenty-first century? Should we adapt to them? Is it time to move on? In this First discussion board, you will write an initial post by taking a position on if the ideals of the declaration are still important for modern Americans. State your stance – yes or no – in your subject line and justify why. If you argue that it is timeless, give us two reasons why with actual, direct quote textual supports and page numbers (thus, not just platitudes but actual details). If the declaration’s principles need altering, tell the two specific parts (again with direct quotes and page numbers) that need adjusting and plead your case with substantiation.

Part B In the second part of the Assignment please discuss the Federalist Papers. In this second part of the assignment please, pick either Federalist Paper 1 or 10 to discuss. Pick a passage that you believe contains wisdom for modern Americans and paraphrase that passage for your classmates with proper citation. Then, explain why you think that is an important passage for modern Americans to understand. The post may illuminate a current phenomenon, answer a contemporary challenge, or be relevant for another reason.
