Importance of Nursing Values and Professional Ethics Related to Advocacy for African Americans
By upholding professional and ethical standards in nursing, nurses are empowered to act independently in making healthcare decisions using their knowledge and skills (American Nurses Association,2015). Professional values impact not just nurses‘ principles and behavior norms but also help us to create an ethical framework. Furthermore, professional values foster nurses’ ethical competency and ability to manage ethical dilemmas. These values and ethics guide nurses in addressing healthcare disparities and promoting the well-being of African-American individuals and communities. According to the ANA (2015), our primary focus is protecting, promoting, and restoring health and wellbeing, preventing illness, and reducing suffering in the care of individuals, groups, and populations. Nursing ethics and principles significantly impact the initiatives and policies nurses struggle for and their perception of the need to find solutions. As an Advanced nurse, my values and ethics require me to avoid discrimination and to work against any form of bias in healthcare. Individuals with mental illnesses may have their fundamental human rights violated due to discrimination. As an advanced nurse, I must strive to eradicate discriminatory practices in healthcare systems and object to racial disparities in mental health access, such as lack of insurance coverage and limited access to treatment for all patients. As a result, patients can make choices that are in their best interests. Additionally, I must promote, advocate for, and protect all patients’ rights, health, and safety (American Nurses Association,2015). The code of ethics serves as a cornerstone for nursing theory, practice, and application in representing the values, virtues, and obligations that shape guide, and inform nursing. These resources form the course of action and focus on the concerns one might advocate for among certain patient populations.
Why do our Nursing Values and Ethics Demand these Priorities
Nursing values and ethics must be prioritized because they are critical to providing high-quality and compassionate care. Nursing values emphasize the significance of patient-centered care, ethical responsibilities, patient advocacy, and cultural competence which adheres to individual patient preferences, needs, and values (Haddad & Geiger, 2023). These priorities guarantee that African Americans receive more personalized and efficient care, resulting in better health outcomes and patient satisfaction.
The Role of Law, Ethics, and Politics Advocacy Priority
Law: Law is an essential component of public health because it structures public health agencies’ missions and shapes how they are carried out. As the industry evolves, laws play an essential role in addressing new challenges and trends. For example, Healthcare law covers many legal issues, including malpractice, informed consent, insurance problems, and government regulations. Some of the most vital components of healthcare laws include the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the False Claims Act, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Anti-Kickback Statute. These laws and rules safeguard patients, guarantee access to high-quality healthcare, and fight fraud and abuse in the healthcare sector. These laws, especially the ACA, have significantly increased approximately eight million African Americans’ access to expanded preventive services, and nearly eight million with preexisting health conditions gained coverage (Noonan et al., 2016).
Ethics: Any healthcare professional must uphold ethical principles. The ethical guidelines are advantageous to patients because they ensure that their autonomy is respected, that they will be treated fairly, and that they will get the best care possible based on their values and choices (Porche, 2023). Health care can be intrusive, and many patients will delay seeking medical assistance without the principle of beneficence. As a result, maintaining a solid ethical framework for healthcare professionals to work with can increase patients’ willingness to seek help and gain their trust, which saves lives.
Politics: Politics is an influential entity setting the policy agenda and its regulations and implementing programs that shape the social determinants of health. Political action is required to close the widening gap in health disparities, especially among African Americans with limited access to mental health services. In advocating for African Americans who lack insurance coverage and limited access to mental health services, Policies that reinforce racism or perpetuate social inequalities that underpin health disparities must be vehemently opposed (Noonan et al., 2016). Government policies and healthcare reform efforts significantly impact insurance coverage for mental health services. Policies that expand Medicaid or improve mental health parity can positively influence access to mental health care for African Americans.
Conclusion
In summary, nursing values and ethics are not just theoretical concepts; they are the foundation of nursing practice and patient care. Nurses have a critical role in resolving healthcare inequities and fostering culturally competent care, guided by the principle of equity, justice, and patient-centeredness.
