Study Question 4 — Identifying rule
“Rules” in science and research can come from many places. Here is a short (and not comprehensive) list of major authorities who create and enforce such rules:
Government (e.g. laws, definitions, and guidelines)
Universities, hospitals or other employers (e.g. policies)
Professional societies (e.g. ethics codes or statements)
Publishers (e.g. policies or guidelines)
Principal investigators (e.g. lab policies or best practices)
Although we are not able to undertake a comprehensive look at all of the authorities, we still have to be conscious of where these rules come from and why they are put in place.
Assignment
Pick an authority and describe a “rule” they enforce related to science or the field of scientific research (e.g. Federal Definition of Misconduct), describe what the “rule” is in a paragraph. Be sure to reference the course material at least once in your response.
