Critique the research study by the professor. Do not paraphrase the actual elements of the study. Write them exactly the way the author did. You should, however paraphrase terms you are asked to define. Use the Polit and Beck (2022) textbook to critique and explain/define the terms for each aspect of the study. The last paragraph of each chapter (beginning with chapter 4) discusses how to critique a specific aspect of the study. It is followed by a green box with critiquing guidelines. Appendix D presents a study and then a sample critique of that study.
Write in narrative form (full sentences). Use four level one headings to organize the paper. APA format required. Yes or No answers are not sufficient. In order to receive credit, you must explain your answers.
When doing a research critique, it is acceptable to put the reference for the article on the bottom of the title page. Do not cite the article within the body of the paper. The Polit and Beck textbook must be cited and referenced as usual.
I. Statement of the Problem:
What problem/issue prompted the authors to do the study?
Is the problem clearly and concisely stated?
Is the problem specific and narrow enough to study?
Does the problem have significance for nursing practice? Explain your answer.
II. Purpose of the Study
What is the purpose of the study?
Are the key variables and population of interest included? What are they?
III. Research Question and Hypothesis
Identify the research question.
Are the key variables and population of interest included?
If there is no research question, formulate one based on the purpose of the study.
Define the terms dependent (DV) and independent variable (IV).
Identify the DV(s) and IV(s) in the study.
Hypothesis
Define what a hypothesis is.
Identify the hypothesis (if there is more than one, identify each)
Is it stated clearly?
Is it a null hypothesis or a researcher hypothesis?
If a hypothesis was not specifically stated, formulate a researcher hypothesis based on the research question or purpose of the study.
IV. Review of Literature
What is the purpose of a review of literature (ROL)?
Is the ROL well-organized?
Does the ROL have a significant amount of recent work (less than five years old)? Are the majority of references from scholarly journals?
Does the ROL provide supporting evidence to show the need for carrying out the research? (Was a gap in the literature identified)?
What is the purpose of using a theoretical or conceptual framework in nursing research?
Was a framework identified? If so, what is it?
Is it adequately described?
If there was no theoretical or conceptual framework, should one have been included?
