Read the attached article, then based on this reading about the voyage of the Endurance, respond to the following questions for this assignment:
1. The skills approach indicates that technical skills are less important the higher one advances in an organization. Yet having technical skill is what greatly aided Shackleton in his leadership on this expedition. Reflecting on your current position within your organization, is this accurate? (As a physician assistant in a family medicine practice, my role likely requires a strong foundation in technical skills related to medical diagnosis, treatment, and patient care. However, it’s also essential to recognize the importance of human and conceptual skills). Discuss the importance of having human, technical, and conceptual skills as a leader. Do you believe leaders at different levels of an organization require different skills? Explain why or why not.
2. When does one type of skill (human, technical, or conceptual) become more important than another? Explain and provide at least two examples of situations that favor one skill over another.
3. What is your preferred leadership style – how do you lead? What style of leadership would you prefer your leader/supervisor to display? Are these the same? Do you prefer to work for someone who has the same/similar leadership style to yours? Explain why or why not.
4. There are times when a leader’s style does not fit the demands of the situation. The contingency model is a situational model based on matching a leader to appropriate situations. Give an example from your own experience of a poor fit that you witnessed. Provide another example when the leader’s style was a perfect match for the situation. What did you learn from both situations?
