You are to create the following:
1) a five-paragraph process essay that contains the following elements:
An introductory paragraph that contains a thesis statement that identifies the process you will outline and includes a plan of development that notes the three big groups of steps for completing the process
Three body paragraphs that discuss the three big groups of steps you outlined in the plan of development in your thesis statement. Each body paragraph should contain the following:
A topic sentence that states the big group of steps you will cover in that paragraph
Additional sentences that explain the small, individual steps that come under the big group of steps noted in the topic sentence
A concluding paragraph that identifies your process again and reiterates your three big groups of steps. Process essay conclusions usually also include some recommendations about what can be gained from performing the process. For example, if you are writing about how to change oil in a vehicle, a popular thing to do in your conclusion would be to tell the reader about how much money can be saved by completing the task.
Topic Selection
Essentially, for the process essay you can simply fill in this blank, “How to _____.” Keep in mind that you do need to be familiar with the process you are describing. You should not need to perform research to write this essay. For instance, do not write about the process of changing a flat tire if you don’t know how to change a flat tire. Don’t ask someone who knows how to change a flat tire just so you can write about that process. Your best chance for writing a good process essay will be, as I have said, if you pick a topic with which you are familiar. The process should be something you do on a regular basis (like engaging in a favorite hobby or performing a procedure in one of your classes or on your job). Topics used by students in the past have included ones such as how to start an IV, braid hair, change oil in a vehicle, install an alarm/camera system, plan a party, tune a guitar, take blood pressure, and apply makeup. You can see from this list that your topic can be an everyday topic or a unique one.
IMPORTANT NOTE: You cannot write an essay on one of the topics from this list: how to write an essay or how to prepare any kind of food/beverage. An essay submitted on one of those topics will receive no credit. If you are concerned about whether your topic is acceptable or not, please send me a Canvas inbox message, and I will let you know.
