Instructions
When working with individuals and families, family therapists can encounter diverse clients, whose life experiences consist of distinctly personal and interpersonal dilemmas. Thus, counselors often make attempts to create a welcoming and open environment for their clients to more comfortably broach the extensive array of topics that may arise during therapy sessions. Not only do therapists engage in highly personal discussions with their clients about sensitive issues, including those revolving around sex and sexuality, but they also may confront conversations considered taboo or off-limits, such as those related to sexual deviance, sex addiction, or pornography. In this assignment, you will reflect on some of these particular conversations and address how theoretical ideas and methodological techniques related to structural family therapy can be useful for therapists and clients working through dilemmas associated with sexual deviance and addiction.
You will begin by reading the peer-reviewed academic journal article, “Structural Therapy with a Couple Battling Pornography Addiction” (located in FSCJ’s Learning Commons Library). You will then summarize the main findings of this research article in two pages (double-spaced) and reflect on what you read in two pages (double-spaced). Your paper will be a total of four pages (double-spaced). Be sure to apply some of the related concepts you have learned about in the text, describing how the journal article connects to the course (and other relevant topics). In addition to highlighting key terms and concepts, you will point out the methodological and theoretical strengths and weaknesses you can identify in the research article (using terms and ideas from your textbook and the journal article). You will also want to briefly identify and assess other possible interventions that could have been implemented (besides Structural Family Therapy) for these or other family issues associated with sexuality or deviance. To promote critical thinking, you will create one discussion question (and place this question at the end of page four in your reflection paper). This discussion question can be general (e.g., a basic question about a topic in the article that stood out to you), or you can ask a question that connects the topic of the article to current events. Alternatively, you can connect the topic to something else you have read about in this course or another human services-related course.
