As you study family therapy theories throughout this course, you will most likely begin to define your own preferred philosophical and theoretical approaches to therapy. With this in mind, you will use the assigned course readings and one peer-reviewed journal article of your choice to compare and contrast the two philosophical traditions that inform family therapy approaches—family systems theory and social constructionist theory. As you reflect on these philosophical traditions in this discussion forum, you will want to highlight the key components of each theory that are of most interest to you. Focus on the theoretical and philosophical approaches and therapies that you can tentatively envision incorporating into your practice.
Your initial post should include the following elements:
Describe and explain each theory’s (i.e., family systems theory and social constructionist theory) relevant concepts, similarities and differences, and philosophical foundations. Include some of the key people associated with each theory. Remember to highlight the key theoretical components and any related philosophical assumptions and therapies of most interest to you.
Describe the potential interventions and techniques that could be used with the systemic and social constructionist theories and therapies that interest you.
Demonstrate your understanding of key competencies in family therapy (e.g., those related to diversity, research, and ethics) by explaining how some of these competencies could be applied to the theoretical ideas and concepts that you described in your post.

Your initial post should be three to five paragraphs in length. Be sure to use in-text citations and full references (citing both the textbook and peer-reviewed journal article that you selected). After you have posted your initial post, read and respond to two of your classmates’ posts. Be sure to make substantive and constructive comments. For example, make connections to theories or ideas that you have learned about in this class or other human services courses, add something from your own experience, and/or incorporate something you’ve read or seen into the discussion. Your response posts should be one to two paragraphs.
