Let’s Discuss: Alexie, Sedaris, and Padilla Peralta
To fully participate in this discussion board, you will need to have read:
Sherman Alexie’s “The Joy of Reading and Writing”Links to an external site.
David Sedaris’ “Me Talk Pretty One Day”Links to an external site.
Excerpts from Undocumented by Dan-el Padilla Peralta
All three of these works look at the topic of education but rather than using a typical “argument” essay, the authors have chosen to use the narrative form. We will be following in their footsteps and doing this for our first essay too!
Please make sure that you do BOTH parts of this discussion board assignment!
PART 1 (7 points):
Below in our first discussion post, I’d like you to answer these questions:
Sherman Alexie argues that education gave him freedom and helped him “break down the door.” Do you think education brings freedom and how have you seen this in your own experiences? Be specific.
David Sedaris uses a specific tone for his essay — humor (or am I the only one who laughed?). Why might he have chosen to do this rather than, as Alexie does, use a much more serious tone? How does this effect your understanding of the narrative?
Dan-el Padilla Peralta uses diction (word choice) as a way to draw the reader into the world of his narrative. How does that effect you as a reader while you’re reading the excerpts? Do you think this was a good choice for his narrative?
