Awww our last post. As was pointed out in our lesson, nurses are on the front line. We see how practices affect our patients and how changes or tweaks can help, Sometimes we do something for a specific patient without realizing that it could be the impetus of a patient improvement project. Well, we know now. And as Maya Angelou says, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” It is time to do better. One barrier that potentially prohibits nurses from engaging in EBP is authority (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2023). This is one that I am addressing in my current, new positon. As it is a different job altogether, I have been learning the ropes and spent a lot of time training. As I am getting to know my new colleagues, I am asking about their thoughts about research. I am also asking about shared governance committees and members. Right now, I have already talked to my peers about a couple of the articles I have read for this class. They appear interested and asked relevant questions. My strategy is to continue to read and discuss the findings. I like how this week’s lesson summarized the process for us- identify a clinical problem- form it into a PICOT question – choose the key terms to search for articles – locate and analyze the article and share research findings (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2023).
This course has changed my thinking about nursing research and evidence based practice in that I now feel that I can DO something instead of passively following orders and, of course, questioning orders when there are concerns or discrepancies. Instead of waiting for others to provide answers, I can search on my own. This in itself has been the learned item that has been the most helpful. One specific thing I learned was to carefully understand the research study population and how it was obtained before assuming the findings could be broadly applied.
Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. I have enjoyed meeting and learning from you all and wish you the best in the future. I have never done this before, but special thanks to you, Dr. Carter for your amazing support and guidance through this course.
