Memo

write a 1-2 page memo about….something. The topic is yours to choose, but there are a few elements that you must incorporate into the final product. First, you need to provide your audience with some kind of information, and second, you need to request some kind of follow-up action. There are a few examples included here which you can feel free to use directly, modify in some way, and then write the memo for it.

Things to keep in mind:
Audience. Who are you talking to?
Tone. Are you being professional? Is the tone respectful, considering who your audience is?
Information. Are you including all the relevant information that the audience should be aware of? Are you NOT including information that is sensitive or otherwise inappropriate for the audience?

What you will turn in:
A 1-2 page memo. This should be formatted to look like a professional memo. You are free to pick font, type size, layout, images, colored paper, or whatever else you can think of. Needs to be a professional document.
A brief (1-2 paragraph) descriiption of the situation. This is not part of your memo; it is a bit of background about the scenario so that I can see what kinds of decisions you make about what to include in the memo.

This assignment may sound simple, but remember that the smaller the document, the more weight each word carries. Make sure you are representing yourself (or your organization) well.
Some ideas which you may use one:

Example 1

You are an entry-level employee at a fancy engineering firm. Write a memo to a higher-up regarding infractions being committed by your immediate supervisor. These violations can be whatever you would like (e.g. lying to customers, violating IRB protocol, stealing company money, etc.). You have spoken to this supervisor regarding the violations, and they threatened to have you fired if you brought it up again. In your memo, relay all the information that you believe to be relevant.

Example 2

You are an IT guy for a sales company. Due to recent internet activity, restrictions are now being placed on the websites that sales reps are allowed to visit. Employees may request exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Write a memo to the sales representatives discussing the new restrictions and how this will affect their job.

Example 3

You are an editor for an online journal. The economy has not been kind, and you are forced to raise your annual subscriiption rates. Write a memo to all your subscribers letting them know of the price change (you can make up how large the increase is, but it has to be at least a 10% rise in price).
