Inequality Inequalities have existed since the beginning of time. Our society seems to place a tremendous amount of effort into promoting a more equal society by “leveling” the playing field. Identify and critique strategies that you are aware of in your community that attempt to “level” the playing field and create equality of opportunities. Do you believe that inequality will always be a social problem? Do we still need programs such as Affirmative Action? Explain Privilege Explain privilege as it relates to equality. Identify one area of privilege that you personally possess. Do you believe that privilege creates social problems? Does everyone have at least 1 type of privilege in our society? How would you assist a client in determining where they had some privilege? REPLY BACK TO THIS STUDENTS POST: Inequality will always be a social problem. This is due to many reasons. One being that all people do not have the same advantages as others. An example of this is the poor education systems in lower income communities. In wealthy neighborhoods the education systems has the better qualified teachers, better facilities, equipment, and more exposure to arts and music. In low income neighborhoods they often struggle to find and retain high quality staff and materials. Situations such as this already puts low-income families at a disadvantage. People of color has always experience inequality. It will continue to be this way if all races are not offered or exposed to the same advantages. I was disappointed to hear of the Supreme Courts recent decision to end affirmative action when it applies to college admissions. Acceptance in to some major colleges has always been a struggle for people of color. Without affirmative action they will have to work twice as hard as their counterparts to be considered for admissions. Allowing programs such as affirmative action exposes others to diversity, helps increase a respect for diverse cultures and permits advantages that people of color may have not normally had.
