Organizations may enjoy a number of different types of competitive advantage, such as access to resources, strong core competencies, and visionary leadership. Prominent among these is the ability to innovate and foster creativity. Whether it be developing new products and services or more efficient and effective means of production, the ability to consistently innovate is of critical importance to an organization’s survival and ultimate success. An organization’s capability to invent and reinvent itself may be even more important than ever before, given what we have thus far learned about technology and the changing business landscape. While striving for a business culture of creativity may seem to be a nebulous goal, at best, the way organizations structure themselves can stifle or sustain an atmosphere in which innovation grows.

Ancient Rome was one of the most powerful and enduring civilizations history has ever known. Yet internal strife and turmoil are often cited as the reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire as those of external forces. As we will see, the hierarchy of authority in an organization results, in part, from unequal distributions of power. The culture and the structure that is subsequently derived from this system of power originate with those who are in positions to directly affect these attributes. Organizations are social entities and the strength of an organization, or lack thereof, is a testament to the quality of the social relationships upon which the organization, itself, rests. Therefore, careful management and nurturing of the internal organizational atmosphere is as important to the business as any other consideration we have studied thus far.
