This week you will be reading documents about World War II. One is a speech made by President Franklin D. Roosevelt before the U.S entered the war, lying out American values. One is a letter by Private Charles Wilson, a member of the Air Force, writing to President Franklin D. Roosevelt to discuss discrimination in the military. The third in a copy of the notice published informing Japanese people of their relocation and internment.
Part 1, Open a thread and make one comment on your classmate’s thread. After reading the documents, consider the following questions. What does President Roosevelt identify as the Four Freedoms. How does Wilson use the idea of American values do argue against desegregating the military. What is the justification for and rules laid out for Japanese internment? What do these documents taken together suggest about the limits put on ideas about freedom and who was defined as American?
