DEBATE OVER ENRIQUILLO’S LEGACY
To arrive at a peace agreement with the Spanish Authorities, Enriquillo agreed to capture and return any escaped African slaves or Indian that ventured into his territory. This has led many to question Enriquillo’s historical legacy- considering him a traitor more than a national hero. Others counter by saying that Enriquillo, perhaps tired of so many years spent hiding and fighting the Spanish, moreover fearing for the safety of his people were he to die, took a pragmatic decision.

What is your take on the issue:
1. Is Enriquillo a traitor, a pragmatist or something else?
2. Would you sconsider him “un Hereo de la Patria Dominicana “(Patriotic hero of the Dominican Republic)? Why?
