In this article published by NPR, journalist Yuki Noguchi offers insights into the ever-changing status of gender norms in the workplace and how it affects all those involved. The article explains how workplaces are faced with decisions such as changing bathrooms to become gender-neutral all the way to how to address workplace discrimination based on gender identity, even down to simple workplace forms that require individuals to choose between one of two options effectively excluding a large portion of the population. It’s stated “There is still not a lot of research quantifying this population, especially since there are so many diverse terms around gender identity. Two years ago, Herman’s Study found 27% of youth in California aged 12 to 17 said their peers would identify them as gender-nonconforming. Other studies show a much smaller prevalence of people who identify themselves as transgender or gender nonbinary.” (NPR 2019) Some workplaces are doing their part in attempting to be as inclusive as possible. Even major corporations have begun to be more inclusive with stretching the boundaries of gender stereotypes and including gender non-conforming individuals in their ads. Since gender is a social construct that forces people into certain “roles” in society, roles that may affect employment in a certain field, or can prevent someone from making the same salary as their opposite gender counterpart.
Do you think that removing “gendered labeling” from marketing campaigns and consumer goods could change the way people see themselves in the future? Could this alter the future of certain job fields that are predominantly dominated by a certain gender to those of the opposite gender not being currently predisposed to that career field?
