I would like a heart felt college admissions essay on being a younger sibling of a brain cancer survivor. My brother was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer, medulloblastoma when he was 12 years old. I am his younger sister and I was 10 years old at the time. My brothers name is Jacob Shedlin and he just met his 5 year mark declaring him cancer free, he plans to attend college in the fall which is a huge accomplishment considering we never new if he’d survive. This may be cliché but my older brother is my true hero. There is no one stronger and more brave than him and I witnessed it on the sideline while he fought for his life.
My name is Taylor and I am now 16 years old. Since cancer entered my life through the lens of my brother and being a sibling through a traumatic time in my life has shaped me into who I am today. I have made it my mission in life to volunteer my time, energy, and passion to help support organizations raise money for research and to support other families going through pediatric cancer. I won’t ever stop until one day there is a cure.
I’m entering my senior year in high school. Last year I competed on my school pageant Miss Bartram Trail, my fellow peers and contestants were all exceptional. This his pageant allowed for us to show our true passion and demonstrate what we stood for as individuals, both academic achievements and philanthropy. I was so honored to place 4th runner up competing with peers I truly admire and respect. The biggest achievement of this experience was raising money and awareness in my local community for an organization that’s near and dear to my heart; The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund, I am an official volunteer for this amazing organization and and was asked to become an ambassador in their Peer to Peer program to help other siblings going through what I went through.
The Jay Fund’s mission is to help families tackle childhood cancer by providing comprehensive financial, emotional, and support. The Jay Fund allows families to focus on their child with the goal to always Be There. I have adopted this as my mission for fight for a cure in honor of my brother and every child or sibling going through the devastation of childhood cancer.
I have cheered since I was 5 years old both competitively, in middle school, and high school, I currently hold 3 State high school titles for varsity cheer and many national competitive cheer titles. This year I was selected by the Varsity brand to be national spokesmodel for them, a Fashionista. This is a huge honor not only for my cheer career but because the Varsity brand perfectly aligns with my mission, they are huge supporters of the St. Jude. I am so blessed and plan to use my national platform to carry on my mission to spread awareness, raise funding, and provided support for families tackling childhood cancer.
As a proud commissioner of the National Honor Society, I have a voice to support my mission to bring awareness to my high school and peers.
Be a sibling of a cancer diagnosis we are often referred to as the silent sufferers, this is so true. While by precious brother was facing his own mortality, I was facing a life without him in it. His fight was my fight and I was and will always be his biggest fan and cheerleader.
