Hello class!
The type of learning I would in the instance of potty training my daughter would be socio-cognitive. It’s interesting that this had been this week’s topic as I have trying to navigate the avenues of parenthood and potty training this past week. While there are many methods in going about potty-training a child, I’ve quickly learned that one method does not always work for all children as they all learn and develop at different rates. How I would introduce the idea of potty training with my daughter would be to allow her to put potty-training underwear or pull-ups on her favorite stuffed animal, right now it is currently a dinosaur, and encourage her multiple times a day to have her stuffed animal use the potty. I would first show her how to train the dinosaur into using the toilet, and once the toy has completed it’s “business” I would celebrate and dance and add a sticker for successfully using the potty. Once my daughter has seen how I have reacted to the dinosaur, she will want to teach the dinosaur to use the bathroom as well. This enables her to know that using the toilet proactively receives a positive response from those around her. I think this scenario is appropriate in introducing potty-training to young children as the using toilets in unfamiliar homes or in public locations can be uncomfortable for children at times. With the exposure of allowing her dinosaur to “use the potty” in places other than at home, it allows her to become more comfortable in those settings over time.
