It’s widely believed that executives are paid excessively, as evidenced by the stark disparity between their pay and that of the median worker for the same company. According to a Yahoo! Finance article, the majority of CEOs are overcompensated, with the average ratio of CEO pay to median worker pay being a whopping 324 to 1 (2023). Once executives are hired by an organization, they’re often granted a high salary and a generous compensation package, which may include short-term, long-term, or deferred rewards (Martocchio, 2020). Most executives receive some sort of stake in the company, such as stock options that can be granted immediately or deferred, to foster a sense of ownership and incentivize them to make decisions that benefit the company and generate the highest return.
It has been reported by Forbes that some highly paid CEOs may not perform well, especially within the first three years of joining a company (Adams, 2014). However, this does not necessarily imply that they are content with their compensation and uninterested in improving the company. In my opinion, most executives have earned their position through hard work and dedication. Although their plans for the company may face obstacles and take longer to materialize, this is not an excuse that board members want to hear. Rather, they expect to see results and have faith in their hiring decision. However, in the event of a failure, the CEO may still receive a generous compensation package upon departure, something a median pay worker would never see.
Despite the challenges and unpredictability of running a company, I believe that executives are often overpaid. A fair and competitive compensation system could help bridge the pay gap and boost productivity across all levels of the workforce.
