Background Information:
There are many issues arising within the mental health care setting that impacts all relevant key stakeholders (consumers, carers, clinicians) involved in care. The Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health system in Recommendation 63 stated that:
The Royal Commission recommends that the Victorian Government ensure that: there is a need to facilitate translational research throughout the mental health and wellbeing system,
including in collaboration with other research centres and institutes. Ensure that evidence
informs workforce education and training, and promotes a culture of inquiry, innovation and
learning; provide authoritative advice on evidence-informed approaches to treatment, care
and support to inform policy development, planning and investment (Royal Commission into
Victoria’s Mental Health System, 2021).
Assessment Task:
Assessment Task 1 – Health Research Project 2 – Research Proposal for a Project
Details of the Task/Instructions:
As mental health nurse leaders who would be practicing at a master’s level, we should not just have the ability to consume research but also be able to participate in the process of
producing evidence-based research findings that informs practice. In this assessment, you are required to write a research proposal for your chosen topic of interest within your clinical/work setting that has the potential to contribute to better clinical outcomes for consumers or improved mental health nursing practice. This issue will be up to you to identify. You need to carefully choose a suitable topic as this would be used in subsequent assessment task in the course.
Please focus on the following research question ‘Will nurses trained in Safewards in the community have the same positive effect on reducing restrictive interventions compared to nurses working in acute settings over a 6-month period’.
A research proposal is a blueprint and a key starting point for any intended research project. A good research proposal should let the reader know why you want to carry out a study and how you intend to carry it out from beginning to end. Generally, the starting point for developing a research proposal is to initially identify what research problem or question you are trying to address. In undertaking this project work you will be expected to demonstrate:
– An understanding of the research process including the identification of a significant
research problem or issue.
– The development of appropriate research questions. If undertaking quantitative research use PICO otherwise, use SPIDER approach.
– The selection and implementation of an appropriate research method.
– A critical review of the relevant literature.
Presentation and format requirements:
• The word count is 1,650 words (+/- 10%)- 6 pages double spacing, 12 size font. The word count excludes the end text references used.
• A minimum of 10 references is required. References used should not be more than 10 years
old except if it is a seminal work/study. Use APA 7th ed style.
• Use 2.5cm margins on each side of the page with double spacing between lines. Use 11 or
12 points fonts.
• The following sections must be included in your proposal:
– Project title,
– Background,
– Research Question,
– Objectives,
– Significance of the study,
– Method (which should include the following sub-headings; study design, study
setting, sampling and recruitment, data collection, data analysis, limited ethical
consideration (this would be discussed thoroughly in Assessment 2) and project
timeline)
• As part of the sources used you will need to include sources that justify your choice of
methodology/methods
