Welcome to the New Course of Soil Science and Technology
Hello, welcome to the new course of soil science and technology which will be offered in the coming semester. I am Sean Sugar Chakravarthi, currently serving as an assistant professor at the Agriculture and Food Engineering Department of IIT Kharagpur. I completed my PhD from Louisiana State University, United States, and joined IIT Kharagpur in 2016.
Why Study Soil?
Soil is one of the most important natural resources. It not only sustains life on Earth but also preserves biodiversity. It provides us with food, fiber, and fodder, and is an integral part of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Soil is also interrelated with other domains like geology and archaeology. Human beings use soil for building different engineering structures and as a filter for pollutants and water. Therefore, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of what soil is and its important processes.
In India, due to the continuously increasing population, there will be a high need for increasing food production in the near future. The only way to achieve this is through precision farming, which requires a clear understanding of soil and its processes. This course will not only cover different physical, chemical, and biological processes of soil but also state-of-the-art technologies like unconventional digital soil mapping, hyperspectral sensors, radioactive proximal sensors, and applications of GIS and GPS in the field of soil science.
Who Will Benefit from This Course?
This course will be beneficial for students preparing for national tests like ICA Junior Research Fellowships and Agricultural Research Service National Eligibility Tests. It will also help students planning to work in fertilizer industries, soil testing services, and environmental testing and consultancy services.
According to Google Trends, there has been a consistent high rate of interest in the field of soil science for a long time. This course will cover various topics such as weathering and soil formation, soil taxonomy, physical processes of soil, chemical properties of soils, soil fertilizers and testing, soil organisms and organic matter, soil pollution and its variation, geographic information system and global positioning system (GIS/GPS), geostatistics, advanced sensors like DRS and px RF, digital soil mapping, and petrol transfer functions.
About the Course
This course will be a 12-week course consisting of a total of 60 lectures. Each week will contain five lectures. I will have two of my PhD students, Misrata and Misrata, as TAs in this course to assist you throughout.
