“ Although introducing bill H.R. 7465 is a great start, here are a few other ways to make the system work better. Streamlining the process from application to forgiveness, making it less complicated with consistent training and incentives for loan servicers personnel and borrowers to get it right. Freezing all interests once borrower has been qualified for the program, the focus should be on paying as much of the principal as possible, not accrued interest. Making all loans eligible for PSLF would be ideal, borrowers should not be disqualified for certain loans type since it all resulted in becoming a public servant. Currently only Federal Direct Loans and Federal loans that were consolidated into a federal consolidation loan are accepted, opening the program for private loans borrowers would make the most sense and help more borrowers, since half of the borrowers who carry student loan debts carry private loans, even if the discharge amount become partially taxable. Additionally, it would be beneficial to give borrowers partial credit for prior payments made that doesn’t necessarily meet the qualified payment requirements standard, which is a payment that is made on time, for the full amount due and under a qualifying repayment plan.”
