WEEK 5: FINAL GROUP PROJECT Overview This week, you examined the various theories of the group process and group leader skills that accompany each theory. The final assignment will help you to clarify and illustrate your understanding of these areas and in particular, how these concepts are revealed in a real-world situation. You should also listen to the lecture, review readings, supplemental materials, and use the rubrics as guides to help you complete the assignment. In this final group project, you will integrate theory with an overall proposal for a group. Use each item as a Level 1 heading to ensure all criteria are met. FINAL COURSE PROJECT (300 Points) Overview This week, you examined group stages and characteristics of each stage. You should review all of the course content to help you complete the assignment. This assignment will count toward your final grade and is worth 300 points. Directions For your final written assignment you will prepare a proposal. This proposal will be approximately 10-12 pages. Please follow APA style (7th edition). Part I: Background Determine the area/field and why you see a possible need for your group: Conduct a literature review.(if you haven’t taken research, check out the Lamar library to see what the latest articles are on the need for your group and what is says about the topic you choose. Write a few paragraphs explaining what your articles you find say. Determine one of the specialization areas (e.g., task, psychoeducation, counseling or therapy from your book). Align the specialization area with the concern/problem you would want to address, which will now be your topic. Specify the form and the content of at least six group sessions and an objective for each group meeting. What would you hope to accomplish in 6 meetings with the group. Part II: Group Logistics Describe the duration of your group with justification to cover the main topic and allow for change. Define the number of participants with a rationale for who to include and who to exclude. List criteria such as gender, cognitive ability, maturity, duration of issue, frequency of issue, intensity of issue, acceptance and/or completion of issue. Describe anticipated changes as a result of members’ participation. Identify potential challenges in your topic area. Explain how you would address individual goals and goals of the group as a whole (e.g., coaching, role play, support for and opportunity to transfer learning to real life)? Part III: Group Leadership, Theory, and Techniques Identify your theoretical orientation and any special considerations for the group. What are your personal leadership qualities? What are some of your weaknesses? Explain if this group will be facilitated only by you, or if you will use a co-leader and why. What are some strengths of the theory from which you will work and benefits for group members? What are some limitations? How might you evaluate the group at the closing? Will you have follow-up? Why or why not? Part IV: Flyer Create a one-page flyer that advertises your group. Include only the information necessary to recruit members: Title of group, purpose, meeting times and place, contact information. References Be sure to cite sources in APA 7th edition style guidelines and include a reference list at the conclusion of your paper.
