Write a paper (1,250-1,500 words) in which you discuss your personal-belief system. Include the following in your paper:
A descriiption of the underlying beliefs that help you to make sense of the world. Within that context, what does it mean to be moral? Immoral? Who says so?
A discussion of your thoughts regarding existence. Is there a spiritual as well as a physical, intellectual, and emotional realm of existence? To what realm do you attribute primary importance? Why? Can you be moral and not believe in a God?
A characterization of your moral philosophy as being predominantly rationalist, intuitionist, emotivist, naturalist, sensualist, theist, secularist, humanist, communitarian, individualistic, or egoist. Why do you characterize your moral philosophy this way?
A discussion of which of the six basic modes (authority, deduction logic, sense experience, emotion, intuition, or science) of moral reasoning you use most often.
A discussion of whether objective morality is possible. Is objective morality desirable? If yes, what is the object of your morality, and how do you avoid the excesses of dogmatism and absolutism? Is all morality subjective? If yes, how can you ever expect others to be moral, and how do you avoid the excesses of moral relativism and nihilism?
A discussion of whether you believe that moral actions or standards should be universalizable. If yes, which ones, and why? If not, why not?
A discussion of whether women and men approach moral dilemmas differently. If yes, how? If no, how do you know? Do you agree that women are more likely to subscribe to a caring ethic and men to a principled ethic? Is there a natural, gender-neutral impulse to be ethical?
