Rhetorical Analysis #3: Music/TV/Film
<
<
Purpose: Not all arguments are made explicitly, but implicit or even unconsciously made arguments still have their meanings and effectiveness determined by the rhetoric utilized. This assignment will challenge you to examine how the media we encounter in our daily lives uses rhetoric to make arguments about the world we live in, whether it’s intentional or not. By requiring you to back up your analysis with research, this assignment will also help you develop your research skills and learn how to use sources in your own work.
<
<
Task: Select a song/music video, TV show episode, or film that you feel makes an argument of some kind (again, this can be intentional or not). Under my guidance, you will perform a small amount of research on the piece of media and/or the argument it is making. Then, using your research and the rhetorical analysis skills you have developed in this course, you will write a paper that analyzes the rhetoric of the piece and how it affects the argument being made.

Editorial-Style Research Argument
<
<
Purpose: So far in this class, we have focused on analyzing rhetoric, but this assignment will challenge you to take what we’ve learned about rhetoric and put it into practice to develop your own argument. This assignment will require you to learn about a contemporary social issue and use what you’ve learned about rhetoric to make an argument appropriate to your rhetorical situation. By requiring you to back up your argument with research, this assignment will also help you develop your research skills and learn how to use sources in your own work.
<
<
Task: Select a contemporary social issue that you are passionate about. Under my guidance, you will perform a small amount of research on the topic. You will then write an editorial-style argumentative paper using your research to support your argument. For this assignment, you will assume your audience to be your fellow NVCC students. Since this is still academic writing, you will still be required to follow proper APA or MLA format, unlike many of the editorials we have read in this class.
<
<
REGARDLESS of your choice, you will be required to use a minimum of four sources for this paper, at least one of which must be a peer reviewed article.

<
Length and Format: 500+ words with a minimum of 4 sources, APA or MLA format for document design, in-text citations, and References/Works Cited—not included in word count.
