It is noon, August 13, 1898. You are an officer during the ongoing Spanish-American War who is stationed in the Philippines. After a short two-hour battle, you and your fellow soldiers have captured the city of Manila, ending the conflict. As your friends celebrate the capture of the capital, you take pencil and paper and write a short descriiption of your experiences over the last four months in this war fighting in Cuba and the Philippines.
Explain the factors that ultimately secured victory for the United States over Spain. Discuss the possible expansion of the United States as a colonial or imperial power in the future. Do you support such an expansion? Why? Consider the United States’ involvement in foreign affairs leading up to this conflict (war causes) and military engagements from the beginning of the year (both Cuba and the Philippines), and reflect on what you and other soldiers experienced during the war. Make sure to cover Cuban and Philippine major battles, leaders, turning points, and new innovations and inventions that the military are using.
