What to Submit
In this activity we will be exploring a data set and collecting some desсrіptive statistics from it. As you follow the directions open up a Word or Google document to write your report. You will copy all of your tables and graphs into this document as you write your report.
Report Requirements
This is a computer assignment. You must type your report. Handwritten work or scans will not be accepted.
Your tables and graphs must be labeled appropriately.
Answer any analysis questions in this report. Analysis questions must be answered in complete sentences.
When you finish the directions go through your report from beginning to end to make sure it is formatted nicely.
When you are done submit a PDF of your report to this assignment. Press the″ submit assignment″ button and upload your PDF.
Example
Here is an example of the report Download example of the reportI want you to submit. This report is based on data summarizing some health care related statisticsLinks to an external site. for a collection of 46 countries. This example is based on a completely different data set than is assigned. However it gives you an idea of what I would like you to submit.
The Data
This google sheetLinks to an external site. contains data describing nutrition content for 77 cereals. Most of the columns are self explanatory. Sugar, means sugar in one serving of cereal. Here are some that need more explanation.
Target – Target audience for cereal (adult, child)
Shelf – Display shelf at the grocery store.
CRRating – Consumer Reports rating
Notice that there are three worksheets in this google sheet. You can navigate the worksheets on the bottom of the screen. In these instructions I will ask you to make calculations from different worksheets so pay attention to which worksheet you are using.
All Cereals has all 77 cereals
Adult Cereals has just the cereals marketed to adults.
Child Cereals has just the cereals marketed to children.
Introduction to Google Sheets
Many of you are unfamiliar with google sheets. The assignment below has instructional videos that are specific to this assignment. However you might want to watch this video for an introduction to the site and some basic navigation.
Computer Assignment
Begin this assignment by loading the cereals data setLinks to an external site..
Note: When you load the data set, copy it to your personal google account. To do this press Make A Copy.
Step 1: Context of Data
Describe the individuals in this study.
List the variables. Which are quantitative? Which are Categorical.
Step 2: Study A Categorical Variable
Create a frequency and relative frequency table for the Target variable. Copy the table into your report.
Example Video: Here is a video that demonstrates creating a frequency and relative frequency table for a different variable
Comparison of Quantitative Variables
Watch the following video paying attention to how you compute, the quartiles, the mean, the standard deviation, and the IQR of data in google sheets. Also pay attention to how you create histograms in google sheets.
Step 3: Summarize the distribution of sugar content in adult cereals
Navigate to the Adult Cereals worksheet.
Create a histogram for the sugar column in this worksheet.
Pick an appropriate number of bins.
Pick an appropriate title for this graph.
Describe the shape of this distribution using vocabulary from chapter 2.
Use formulas to compute the following desсrіptive statistics for sugar content in adult cereals:
The five number summary – minimum,
, median,
, and maximum
Measures of Center: Mean and Median
Measures of Spread: Standard Deviation and IQR.
Step 4: Summarize the distribution of sugar content in children′s cereals
Navigate to the Child Cereals worksheet.
Step 5: Analyze The Data
Do you think cereals marketed to children are sweeter than cereals market to adults?
This should not just be an opinion now. Support your conclusion by citing the statistics and graphs above. Write at least a paragraph stating your conclusion and justifying it with data.
