Why do characters often perform their magic with the help of a special object? Name some specific objects in ancient myths, traditional fairy and folktales, and current fantasy and science fiction stories.

In most cases, I feel characters use magical instruments or devices for protection or for magical abilities. For example in Harry Potter, Harry owns a magic wand that can cast spells, ward off evil, and protect Harry from any danger out there. Throughout the entire series, we follow a group of wizards that can cast spells with their wands, possess magical abilities to shape shift, and/or can use other magical devices to do things. Another example in Harry Potter would be the invisible cloak. This cloak has the ability to turn whoever is wearing it, invisible. I feel there are so many examples to give and through all the examples, I feel a common thread is that these devices are always used in a form of protection.
