In this Unit we have been learning about the nature of the Greek gods, the role of those gods in Greek religion, and a summary of the 14 main Olympian deities. For discussion this week I want you think about contemporary American society through a polytheistic lens in order to unpack and process the role of the gods in ancient Greek society and myths by means of examples that are more familiar to us.
Think about a certain element of contemporary society for which we could have a god, were we living in a polytheistic society (e.g., an Internet God, a God of Drive-through fast food, a god of College admission, etc.) and describe him/her:
Is your god male or female? Why?
Is your god ouranic or chthonic? Why?
Does your god have any particular epithets? What is the significance of the different manifestations?
What is your god’s outward appearance and/or attributes? What is the significance of these?
Is your god popular? Widely worshipped? Significant to a particular subset of the population?
Are there “myths” connected to your god?
(This list is not exhaustive and if you want to make other comments, observations, etc. I leave it up to your discretion).
