Often, WWI is overshadowed by WWII, especially here in the U.S. But I’d like us to consider this first world war for a moment. The Great War was fundamental to the shaping of the twentieth century. How it ended led to many of the reasons for the start of WWII, it spurred the birth of the Soviet Union, put the U.S. on the global stage, and drew lines on the map that are still contested over to this day. Rise of Nationalism was a key part in establishing these lines. For this essay let me ask you these questions:
Do you think for this time period, this was acceptable for Europeans being established by their nationalities instead of historical/geographical backing on a map? Do you think that the victors of WW1 to be too harsh on the Central Powers or didn’t go far enough? What about all the countries that had attended the Paris Peace Conference (Versailles Treaty), was it right for what happened regarding whom should have a say in establishing this new European continent? And finally, do you think that the League of Nations was the best action for lasting peace throughout the world?
