The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate your understanding of dramatic structure and plot structure.

Paper should be a minimum of 1.5 pages, and as long as needed to cover the material requested.

Using a movie of your choice (because you will already be familiar with the elements and won’t need to watch new material) I want you to write a paper that meets all the following prompts:

Determine and describe where the five major elements of Dramatic Structure begin and end (or occur.)

Determine what type of plot structure is being used, support your reasoning.
<
Determine who the protagonist and antagonist are, support your reasoning.
<
Describe protagonist’s goals and the obstacles encountered How are the obstacles overcome?
<
Is there peripeteia? If yes, what form does it take?
<
Locate any Hamaratia and/or Anagnorisis, and describe how they impact the climax and falling action.
<
Is there Catharsis? (In order to determine this, you need to decide if you “see yourself” in any of the characters struggles.) Can you relate in any way to their experiences or what has happened to them? Does this story reveal anything ABOUT YOURSELF to YOU?

A danger of this assignment is to simply “walk through the story” by retelling it blow for blow, but failing in that process to actually respond to the seven prompts above. Failure to respond to a prompt for this paper will result in a lower grade.

Look for the minor elements to help you bracket where the major elements begin and end.
<

Peripeteia, hamartia and anagnorisis can be subtle. Be careful not to overlook them. Use the movie “The Notebook”
