For you essay paper, I would encourage you to maintain a more personal tone. However, their should be clear links between your reflections and readings, presentations, and other responses provided in the session. Responses should be succinct and thorough. One of the goals for this course is to help you transition from a typical new supervisor stage of focusing mostly on clinical case dynamics to focusing on your trainees, what they are learning, how they are interacting with their clients. Here is an article for more information on making this shift in your thinking (Borders, 1992)Download (Borders, 1992) As you write each essay, think in terms of naming an idea or concept, defining or explaining it succinctly, and then providing examples in the supervision context (not clients) beyond teaching concepts to trainees. For example, how you will help trainees learn the area or how might these dynamics play out in the supervisor/supervise relationship? Some of the articles provided focus on therapy and client dynamics, however as you read these articles think about what these ideas mean in supervision dynamics and system, not just in families or in the family/therapist subsystem. This also will help you switch your thinking to include supervision dynamics rather than therapy. A good structure for the paper is to first name the basic ideas. For example, “three system concepts that I think are important include….” Or “My own approach to therapy includes elements of ….” Or “Roles that are important to me in supervision include….” Next, define/describe these ideas, typically with citations from the literature. Finally, provide examples in the supervision system or supervision dynamics, including how you will help trainees learn relative to the topic. Your essays will be graded using the rubric provided. Evaluation will consider completeness of the assignment (all parts of the assignment are addressed) and accuracy of descriptions and definitions of terms and concepts with appropriate citations and references. Essays will also be evaluated on relevancy of examples within the supervisory system and dynamics, not about families, or solely related to trainees and their clinical work; include yourself in the supervisory system and dynamics and what this looks like. Papers must include at least 2 citations (at least one other than Lee & Nelson or the presentations) and a reference/works cited section at the end. Place assignment title at the top of your paper. Essay 1-Purpose and Goals for Supervision Instructions: Submit a one-page single spaced essay exploring the purpose and goal of supervision through answering the following questions: There are many purposes for supervising including, (1) enhancing clinical skills, (2) encouraging professional skills, (3) ensuring client care, (4) gatekeeping, and (5) attending to self-of-the-therapist. Choose three of the above-named important purposes of supervision. For each of the three purposes, name at least one short-term goal to be achieved early in supervision and one long-term goal to be achieved by the end of supervision. For each short-term and long-term goal, include at least one idea about how you will help trainees reach the goal.
