We have been reading The Story of More by Hope Jahren, a book that outlines the consequences of industrialization and consumerism and urges us to write and enact a “story of less” in our personal and public lives.
In our third and final unit, you will further investigate one of the San Mateo Community College District’s sustainability programs, analyze and evaluate different sources on your topic, and write a paper explaining and evaluating this program and giving advice about what additional action is needed and why. You’ll also create a “One-Pager” to summarize your work.
Parts of Your Project
Part 1: In preparation for parts 1 and 2, write an annotated bibliography explaining the relevance of 3 sources about your topic. One of your sources should be a relevant page from the SMCCD Sustainability website (https://sites.google.com/my.smccd.edu/smcccdsustainability/home?authuser=0), and the other two should be sources that you find through the CSM Library. Part 2: In a well-developed and clearly organized essay, explain and evaluate built environment sustainability programs, based on their website (https://sites.google.com/my.smccd.edu/smcccdsustainability/about/meet-the-team?authuser=0)
You will introduce the program, describe the problem(s) it aims to solve, evaluate its real and/or potential effectiveness, and suggest further steps you think are necessary for an effective program.
Part 3: Create a “one-pager” – a visually engaging one-page summary of your work in part 2 with the SMCCD sustainability team in mind as an audience.
Requirements and Tips for Success in Part 1, the Annotated Bibliography
As you research, you will write an annotated bibliography entry for each source. One of your sources should be part of the SMCCD Sustainability website (https://sites.google.com/my.smccd.edu/smcccdsustainability/home?authuser=0), and the others should include at least one source that is NOT a website (e.g. a news article, a scholarly journal article, a video, or a book). You should also use different sources from the others in your group. This will give you more ideas for sources for your paper. You can (and should!) use more than three sources for your paper, listing all of them in your Works Cited, but only three annotated bibliography entries are required. Each entry should be structured as follows:
1. A full MLA citation and a link to the source (if available)
– If you want help citing your source, visit the CSM Library Citation Page (https://libguides.collegeofsanmateo.edu/mla) for guidelines and to access NoodleTools, a citation generator.
2. A paragraph with a brief summary of the source and an evaluation of the source:
The summary (3-5 sentences)
– The first sentence should be a citation sentence and include the main idea of the whole article.
– Summarize the information that relates to your topic.
– Don’t repeat information you have included in a different summary; the source should add new information to your project.
– Be concise! Follow the guidelines for an effective summary.
The evaluation (3-5 sentences)
– First, evaluate the quality of the source.
– Mention the type of source and explain how it does or does not meet the criteria in the CRAAP test.
– Consider commenting on the accessibility of the source’s language, layout etc; you may also mention whether or not you recommend it to another ESL 400 student and why.
– Next, describe how the content of the source adds to your project.
– What important evidence does it add that other sources don’t have?
– How will that evidence complement the other information you have already found?
– How will that engage, inform, or persuade readers?
Requirements and Tips for Success in Part 2, the Essay
Write 4 pages minimum (12-point font, approximately 1200 words, double-spaced). Include the following:
An introduction that
– Builds urgency about the issue, showing why it matters.
– Provides background information that readers need to understand your findings.
– Ends with a thesis statement with a clear point of view.
Body paragraphs that use the PEA(EA) strategy.
Topic sentences should give the point of each paragraph clearly near the beginning.
Evidence from at least 4 sources in the form of summaries, paraphrases, and/or quotations.
Sources must include:
– The Story of More, by Hope Jahren
– The SMCCD Sustainability website (https://sites.google.com/my.smccd.edu/smcccdsustainability/home?authuser=0)
– At least 2 additional sources from a library database (https://collegeofsanmateo.edu/library/)
– Follow guidelines for when and how to quote.
– Paraphrase more often than you quote!
– Your own analysis of the significance of that evidence.
A conclusion that
– Reviews the main points of the essay and
– Leaves the reader with a final thought about the importance of this issue and a call to action about what readers/SMCCD might do.
Unit 3 grammar and vocabulary labeled as follows:
– 2 noun phrase appositives, bolded and labeled (NPA)
– 2 participle phrases, bolded and labeled (PARTP)
– 4 words from The Story of More vocabulary list (see appendix A of the Course Reader) bolded and labeled (VOC)
A Works Cited page formatted properly using MLA style. Annotated bibliography entries are not needed here (that’s a separate document) – just the full citations.
Requirements and Tips for Success in Part 3, the One-Pager
Create a one page, 8 ½ by 11 inch document that fills the entire page with:
– A title that accurately reflects your project.
– The key takeaways from your project, particularly as they apply to SMCCD’s sustainability team.
– Your thesis (You may want to change the wording to fit the topic and format).
– Brief information about your evaluation of SMCCD’s sustainability program.
– Your suggestions for further steps.
– At least one quote.
– Don’t forget citations!
– At least 2 visual elements – pictures, symbols, or charts.
– Be creative! You may create this digitally, with a tool like Canva or by hand.
– You should also be ready to explain your one-pager to others.
