Step 1: You probably already do a fair amount of writing: for courses, on social media or a blog, for a job… What would you say are your strengths? How about your weaknesses? What are your goals for writing this semester? Where do you think this course can help?
Step 2: In a second paragraph, talk about what you think is necessary for a learning space that is safe, encourages curiosity, inquiry, and experimentation. Please make sure to respond to each of the following 3 questions:
What responsibilities do students have to each other? How can you help each other succeed?
What responsibilities do students have to the teacher? How can we succeed and collaborate?
What responsibilities does the teacher have to students? How can I help you succeed?
Step 3: Think of a specific class, in high school or college, which you felt created a space that helped students learn, grow, and succeed. It can, but does not need to be, an online class. Briefly tell us about the class and what specifically about it helped you learn and grow. My values about equitable learning spaces can be found in the “Equity and inclusivity in our learning environment” section of the syllabus; think of these policies as the foundation of how we work together in this class. After everyone has posted to this discussion board, I will look through your responses, identify common ideas and themes, and compile them into a “Class Values and Common Commitments” document that will guide our interactions with each other for the rest of the summer session.
