Goal: The goal of this assignment is to look back at our profession’s history and consider how that history informs the current practice of nursing in the US. Basically – how can our past help us understand our present?
Directions:
First, review all module materials and the article Beyond Florence: Valuing Nurses in the History of Health CareLinks to an external site.. Then, pick one of the following topics to explore further: (1) “Granny” midwives in the rural South, (2) history of Native American nursing, (3) history of Filipino nurses in the US or (4) Black nurse activists during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960-70’s.
Next, write a primary discussion post that includes the following. Use APA formatting for references.
1. Provide a brief summary of what you learned about the topic, assuming your classmates know nothing about it. You should highlight a key historical nursing figure and briefly describe the sociopolitical context of the time.
2. Explain how this history can help us better understand the profession of nursing today. Does your new historical knowledge change the way you view/understand the profession? What lessons can we learn from the past in order to advance the future of nursing?
