Week 8 Final Assignment Instructions
I note that I cannot grant extensions on the final assignment!
–
For your final assignment, you need to present an argument in response to the following question: Should Douglas MacArthur be called ″MacArthur the Great″ (as a reflection of having equal status with ATG and FTG)?
a
To answer this question effectively, you will need to address and determine three things:
a
Was MacArthur a Great Military Leader? (A necessary prerequisite)
Is our definition of a Great Captain valid? (testing our analytical framework)
Was MacArthur a Great Captain? (applying our analytical framework)
a
Once you have determined the answers to these three questions, you can use them as the basis to provide your response to the main question posed for your consideration: Should Douglas MacArthur be called ″MacArthur the Great″ (as a reflection of having equal status with ATG and FTG as one of history′s legitimate Great Captains)?
a
Use the examples of Alexander the Great and Frederick the Great to determine the validity of our definition of Great Captains, and then apply the results of these assessments to your analysis of MacArthur to arrive at your answer. This will allow you to make use of the material we have studied in this course, demonstrate your mastery of it by referring to it throughout your assessments, and applying it to your assessment of MacArthur to provide a response to the question.
a
Here is how your response should be formatted (please follow closely, so I can focus on the substance of your response):
Introduction — 1 page
Assessment of Alexander the Great — 1-2 pages
Assessment of Frederick the Great — 1-2 pages
Determination of Validity of Our Great Captain Definition — 1 page
Assessment of MacArthur (the Great?)as a Great Military Leader and as a Great Captain — 5-7 pages
Conclusion: Should Douglas MacArthur be called ″MacArthur the Great″ (as a reflection of having equal status with ATG and FTG)? — 1-2 pages.
a
Several important tips in terms of approach and structure:
Ensure that you state your hypothesis explicitly somewhere in your introduction (e.g., ″MacArthur was a great military leader who was also a Great Captain, and he deserves the title of “MacArthur the Great″ as a reflection of having equal status with ATG and FTG″ or ″MacArthur was a great military leader, but he was not a Great Captain and does not deserve the title of “MacArthur the Great,″ reflecting that he was not of the same status as either ATG or FTG″) so I know what position you are arguing. This will also help me evaluate your argument and use of evidence to support it (which are important learning objectives for this assignment).
Structure the main portion of your answer by addressing each of your main points directly, providing at least two references to the lesson material for support for each main point (and to demonstrate mastery of the substance we have studied)
Ensure that you begin your conclusion by stating if your argument has confirmed or refuted your hypothesis. This will help provide structure to your response, and it will also allow you to demonstrate additional mastery of your ability to apply the social science method correctly and effectively (which is an important learning objective of this assignment).
Requirements for the substance of your response:
Use your assessments of ATG and FTG to confirm or refute the validity the MILS512 definition of a Great Captain; that is the purpose of this requirement
Use the essential components of the MILS512 defintion of a Great Captain – Leader in Battle/War; Master of the Art of War; Military Genius – to structure both your brief assessments of ATG and FTG, and also of your assessment of MacArthur (the Great?);
Address each of the three elements of the essential components
– Courage, Vision, and Morality for Leader in Battle/War
– Theory of War, Science of War, and Experience for Master of the Art of War
– Intellect, Creativity, and “Eye of Command” for Military Genius
– in your assessments of ATG FTG, and (esp.) MacAthur (the Great?); mention them briefly for ATG and FTG, and address them substantively for MacArthur (the Great?)
You must use the course material (Lesson Notes and readings) as the main sources of evidence to demonstrate your mastery of them (which is an important learning objective for this assignment)
Technical Requirements
Your paper must be at a minimum of 10-12 pages (the Title and Reference pages do not count towards the minimum limit).
You must make use of the lesson material (lesson notes and assigned readings) as the main sources of reference to provide support for your response. Using outside sources is okay, but focus on making use of the lesson material to allow you to demonstrate mastery of the course content.
Type in Times New Roman, 12 point and double space.
Use the current Turabian Style as the sole citation and reference style for this assignment.
All submissions will be graded using the assignment rubric.
