We are analyzing the State of the Union address by President Jimmy Carter.

if the president’s speech did conform to the genre of which it is a member, evaluate whether
the speech “worked”. What evidence is there that it worked? If so, to what extent did
conformity with generic expectations help it to “work”? Explain.
• If it did conform to generic expectations, explain how it failed to work despite conforming to
those expectations. Why? Is there something unique about the situation he faced that
called for a departure from the generic expectations?
• If some aspect(s) did not conform to generic expectations, evaluate whether it was
appropriate that the speech did not meet generic expectations. If so, what was unique
about the situation he faced that warranted his departure from generic expectations? Or,
did his violation of generic expectations have negative implications
