The Mid Semester Write Up marks the halfway point of our course for spring 2024 semester.
As such, this assignment is created to assess what you have learned and what has stood out for you so far from the materials we have covered. For this assignment, I am asking you to create/write a historical narrative based on a topic of your choice below (make sure you answer the questions).
You are the historian documenting these events, so speak truth to power in your writing based on the facts:
Choose 1 prompt from the 5 below to answer from the time period we have covered and analyzed so far in class 1492-1875, so from the arrival of Columbus to the American continent all the way to 1875.
Explain the motives behind English colonization in 1548, what narrative was used to dehumanize the existing people of the American Continent? Why does this still matter today?
What events led to the arrival of kidnapped and enslaved Africans in 1619 on the Virginia coast, can you tell me more about them and their legacy as people?
Why did the aftermath of Bacon’s Rebellion reshape slavery and who was to be considered White? Why does that still matter today?
Explain what is Jim Crow and why it was established in the South and the ripple effects it had on the North. Why does it still matter today?
Why did the Mexican-American War occur, what were the motivations behind it and how did Mexicans in the Southwest show resilience and resistance? What happened after the war to these Mexicans? Why does it still matter today?
This will be told with accurate historical details about the lives and perspectives of the people you are focusing on and please make sure to reflect on their dehumanization, oppression, and the will and resilience to survive.
Use your imagination, your creativity and most importantly, the knowledge you have accumulated throughout your journey in this course.
This assignment needs to be at least 3 pages long and no more than 5 pages. Please make sure to use MLA format. When you paraphrase, cite your source!!
